Seoul is home to nearly 10 million people and is one of the most connected, caffeinated, and culturally dense cities on the planet. As an English teacher, you'll find yourself in the center of everything — from Michelin-starred restaurants and rooftop bars to centuries-old temples and late-night pojangmacha street stalls. The city runs on a subway system so reliable and extensive that most teachers rarely need to hail a cab.
Living in Seoul means access to the full spectrum of expat life in Korea. Itaewon, Haebangchon (HBC), and Yongsan host the city's most international neighborhoods with diverse food options, English-friendly bars, and a long-established foreigner community. Hongdae pulses with youth energy — indie music, street art, and weekend markets. Gangnam and the Han River districts cater to those who want polished city living.
The tradeoff is cost: Seoul is significantly more expensive than smaller Korean cities. Studio apartments in desirable areas start around 500,000–700,000 KRW/month plus a hefty jeonse deposit, and eating out in trendy neighborhoods adds up fast. But with most hagwon packages including housing allowances, many teachers find the lifestyle very manageable.
Cost of Living
Studio rent: 500,000–900,000 KRW/month + deposit. Meal at a local restaurant: 7,000–12,000 KRW. Coffee at a chain café: 5,000–6,500 KRW. Monthly transport pass: ~55,000 KRW.
Housing
Officetel (studio), two-room, or shared housing common for expats. Most hagwons provide or subsidize housing. Popular expat areas: Itaewon, Mapo, Mapo-gu (Hapjeong/Mangwon), Seongdong.
