Itaewon (이태원) is Seoul's historically international neighbourhood, shaped by its proximity to the US Army Garrison Yongsan. For decades it was the go-to area for anything foreign — Mexican food, English-language books, international-sized clothing, and visa support services. That legacy remains, but Itaewon has also evolved: the Haebangchon (HBC) hill behind it is a hub for long-term expats who prefer a quieter local feel, while the Gyeongnidan-gil (경리단길) stretch has become one of Seoul's hippest dining streets.
For English teachers, Itaewon represents the full expat infrastructure of Seoul: international doctors, immigration lawyers, foreign-language churches, global food chains, and Western-style bars all concentrated in one walkable area. The Yongsan-gu ward has good schools for teaching positions and the line 6 subway provides solid connectivity.
The 2022 Halloween tragedy cast a long shadow over the neighbourhood. Itaewon is recovering, with businesses reopening and community events returning — but it's worth knowing the history. The alley where the tragedy occurred has been memorialised, and the broader community has continued to show resilience.
Cost of Living
Studios: 600,000–900,000 KRW in Itaewon main area. HBC and Gyeongnidan-gil are slightly cheaper at 500,000–750,000 KRW. All prices include premium for the international neighbourhood.
Housing
Mostly old villa apartments and newer officetel buildings. HBC has a strong long-term expat rental market — many apartments passed hand-to-hand between English teachers over decades.

Expat Tips for Teachers
HBC is the neighbourhood to live in — quieter than the main strip, still international, and apartments are cheaper with the same walkability.
Seoul Central Mosque provides halal food shops around it — useful if you have dietary restrictions or want to explore Korean halal cuisine.
The foreigner-friendly services are concentrated here for a reason: immigration lawyers, English-speaking doctors, international banks all have offices nearby.
Gyeongnidan-gil has transformed into one of Seoul's best dining strips — worth a dedicated food crawl with new colleagues.
