What is GEPIK?
GEPIK (Gyeonggi English Program in Korea) places native English-speaking teachers in public elementary, middle, and high schools across Gyeonggi Province — the ring of 31 cities and counties surrounding Seoul. GEPIK is administered by the Gyeonggi-do Office of Education (goe.go.kr) and most current placements are recruited through the national EPIK office (epik.go.kr), with Gyeonggi-specific bonuses and contract provisions.
For teachers, GEPIK offers the best of both worlds — the stability and benefits of a Korean public school contract, paired with direct subway access to Seoul and lower living costs than central Seoul placements. Korvia has been a GEPIK recruiting partner since 2008.

Common Questions About GEPIK
Q.Is GEPIK the same as EPIK?
GEPIK (Gyeonggi English Program in Korea) is administered by the Gyeonggi-do Office of Education, while EPIK (English Program in Korea) is the national program. Today most Gyeonggi placements flow through the national EPIK office, and Gyeonggi also runs a direct spring intake. Benefits, eligibility, and contract structure follow the EPIK framework for most placements.
Q.What salary can I expect teaching in Gyeonggi?
Monthly salary depends on your qualification level and experience. Korvia's current published scale ranges from ₩2.2M (Level 2 — bachelor's + TEFL) up to ₩2.6M (Level 1++ — consecutive renewal with GEPIK). For the latest official figures refer to epik.go.kr Salary & Benefits.
Q.Are there Gyeonggi-specific bonuses?
Yes. Gyeonggi offers a 2,000,000 KRW renewal bonus — 1,300,000 KRW at the start of the renewed contract and 700,000 KRW at its end — per the official epik.go.kr Salary & Benefits page. Rural and multi-school allowances may also apply.
Q.Do I have to live in Seoul?
No — GEPIK schools are in Gyeonggi Province cities such as Suwon, Seongnam, Goyang, Yongin, and Bucheon. Housing is provided near your school. Many Gyeonggi locations are 30–60 minutes by subway from central Seoul, so you get Seoul access without Seoul rent.
Q.Is TEFL required?
A TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate of 100+ hours from an accredited program is required unless you hold a teaching license, B.Ed., M.Ed., or education-related degree. Certification may be completed during the application period, finalized at least six weeks before arrival. (Source: epik.go.kr Eligibility.)
Q.How long is the contract?
One calendar year (365 days; 366 days on a leap year), renewable for additional years. The Gyeonggi renewal bonus is paid in two installments across the renewed term. (Source: epik.go.kr Duties + Salary & Benefits.)
