Teach English in Gangnam

Korea's most famous district — Gangnam Style wasn't just a song, it's a lifestyle of polished streets, elite hagwons, and rooftop cocktail bars.

Cost of Living

Very high — Gangnam-level

Region

Seoul

From Seoul

Gangnam is central Seoul — accessible via Line 2, 3, 7, 9, and Sinbundang Line

Key Stations

Gangnam Station

Gangnam-gu is the wealthiest district in Seoul and one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Asia. The area south of the Han River became synonymous with upscale Korean life after the massive real estate development of the 1980s, and it shows: wide boulevards, designer boutiques, luxury apartment blocks, and Korea's densest concentration of premium private academies (hagwons). For English teachers, Gangnam means prestige pay rates and a polished work environment.

The district runs along the Gangnam-daero commercial spine, with Apgujeong and Cheongdam to the north (K-pop entertainment companies, luxury fashion), Sinchon and Nonhyeon in the centre, and the COEX convention district to the east. The Sinbundang Line connects Gangnam to Pangyo and Bundang in minutes, making the whole tech and edu corridor accessible.

Gangnam has a reputation for being expensive and image-conscious, which is fair. But it's also extremely convenient, safe, and well-connected. Young professionals and entertainment industry workers fill the neighbourhood's cafés and rooftop bars on weekends. The Han River parks (Banpo, Ttukseom) are a short taxi ride away for picnics and cycling.

Cost of Living

Studio officetels: 800,000–1,400,000 KRW/month + large deposit. Meal in a mid-range restaurant: 12,000–20,000 KRW. Premium gym memberships: 80,000–150,000 KRW/month.

Housing

Premium officetel and apartment towers dominate. Most expat teachers in Gangnam receive school-provided housing to offset costs. Apgujeong is the most upscale sub-area; Seocho and Banpo slightly more affordable.
