Seongsu-dong (성수동) in Seongdong-gu is Seoul's fastest-gentrifying neighbourhood and its most credibly "cool" district. What was once a working-class leather goods manufacturing area has transformed over the past decade into a dense cluster of concept stores, specialty coffee roasters, design studios, and pop-up galleries — all housed in converted industrial buildings.
For English teachers, Seongsu sits between two worlds: its industrial heritage keeps rents slightly lower than Gangnam or Hongdae (though rapidly rising), while the lifestyle is arguably the highest-quality in the city. The neighbourhood is young, well-designed, and extremely Instagrammable. Many of Korea's most exciting restaurants and cafés open here first before expanding citywide.
The neighbourhood is served by Line 2 with direct access to Gangnam (2 stops) and central Seoul, making commuting very practical. The Han River is a 5-minute walk from the main café strip, with Seoul Forest Park (서울숲) one stop away for weekend greenery.
Cost of Living
Rents have risen sharply: studio 600,000–900,000 KRW/month near the main café strip. Still cheaper than Gangnam proper but the gap is closing. Finding a place through local networks or Korean real estate apps (직방, 다방) helps.
Housing
Mix of converted industrial lofts (rare, expensive), modern officetel buildings, and older brick villas. The area attracts creative professionals and the housing stock reflects that — lots of character, variable maintenance.
Key Neighbourhoods
Seongsu-dong 1가 (the coffee/design core)
Seongsu-dong 2가 (quieter, residential)
Seoul Forest area (Ttukseom, greener, families)
Achasan-dong (cheaper, still connected)

Seongsu is very walkable within the neighbourhood. Get off at Seongsu Station and most of the key spots are within 15 min on foot.
Culture & Vibe
Design-forward, creative, quietly confident. Seongsu doesn't try as hard as Hongdae — it's already arrived. Weekend crowds are significant but the weekday neighbourhood is calm and creative.

Expat Tips for Teachers
Rents are high and rising fast — if you can get a housing package from your school and pick Seongsu, do it before prices normalise fully to Gangnam levels.
Seoul Forest is the best park in Seoul for weekday morning runs and weekend picnics. Cherry blossom season (early April) is spectacular.
The neighbourhood's weekday pace is completely different from weekends — peaceful, with mostly locals and creatives at the cafés.
Line 2 to Gangnam Station is 2 stops / 4 minutes. This area has essentially Gangnam connectivity at slightly lower cost.
