Key Stations
Hongik University Station
Hongdae (홍대) is the neighbourhood surrounding Hongik University in Mapo-gu, and it's the undisputed hub of Seoul's indie culture. The area is famous for its street performances, underground clubs, and creative energy that draws art students, musicians, and young expats in equal measure. On a Friday or Saturday night, the streets around Hongik University Station are some of the most electrically alive in Asia.
For English teachers, Hongdae sits at a sweet spot: close enough to central Seoul to feel connected, but with a neighbourhood identity so strong it functions as a community. Many hagwons operate in the surrounding Mapo-gu area, and the subway (Line 2 + Airport Railroad) makes commuting anywhere in Seoul easy.
The tradeoff is noise. Hongdae doesn't sleep on weekends, and apartments near the main drag are loud until 4 or 5am on Fridays and Saturdays. Teachers who value quiet choose the quieter side streets one block back, or the adjacent Hapjeong/Mangwon area for the same vibe with calmer residential streets.
Cost of Living
Studio: 550,000–850,000 KRW/month. Expect to pay a premium for anything within 5 min of the main street. Hapjeong and Mangwon (5–10 min walk) are noticeably cheaper.
Housing
Mix of officetel studios and older villa apartments. Most expat teachers use the Mapo-gu housing allowance to rent near Hapjeong or Mangwon rather than directly in Hongdae centre.
Key Neighbourhoods
Hongdae main street (술집·클럽 zone)
Hapjeong-dong
artsy, slightly calmer
Mangwon-dong
local market, leafy streets
Sangsu-dong
indie cafés, quieter vibe

Expat Tips for Teachers
Get a unit on a side street or in Hapjeong — the club noise from the main street can be extreme on weekends.
Gyeongui Line Forest Park is the neighbourhood's outdoor living room — locals jog, read, and date along its 6km length.
The Airport Railroad stop means Incheon Airport is 43 min away — useful for visa runs and flying out.
Mangwon Market (망원시장) is one of Seoul's best traditional markets — 500 KRW kimbap and fresh produce at half the supermarket price.
