Bundang was Korea's first large-scale new town, built in the early 1990s to house Seoul's overflow population. Three decades on, it has matured into one of Korea's most desirable places to live: wide tree-lined streets, clean apartment complexes, excellent schools, and a strong community infrastructure. The Bundang Line (now extended as the Sinbundang Line) whisks residents to Gangnam in under 20 minutes.
Adjacent Pangyo, developed in the 2010s, is Korea's answer to Silicon Valley — home to Kakao, NCSoft, Krafton, Kakao Games, and dozens of other tech companies. This has made the area popular with young Korean professionals and created a vibrant café and restaurant scene around Pangyo Station. For English teachers, this means affluent students, competitive pay at premium hagwons, and a well-resourced suburban lifestyle.
The area has a strong family orientation — most students are children of professionals — which means serious academic expectations from parents. Teachers at Bundang-area academies often describe well-prepared, motivated students and structured school environments. Seongnam city overall includes both Bundang-gu and the older Sujeong/Jungwon districts, but most expat teachers are placed in Bundang.
Cost of Living
Studio/officetel: 600,000–1,000,000 KRW/month. Family apartments significantly higher. Meals: 9,000–15,000 KRW. Comparable to Seoul outer districts.
