SMOE Application Process & Timeline

The step-by-step path to teach in Seoul through EPIK — from online application to your first day in the Seoul classroom.

EPIK Orientation

Seoul positions are filled exclusively through EPIK — there is no direct SMOE application. Apply through Korvia (EPIK's official recruiting partner) and select Seoul as your preferred province. Because Seoul is the most competitive EPIK placement, apply early and bring strong qualifications (TEFL + teaching experience).Source: Official SMOE 2026 application process.

The 9-Step SMOE Application Timeline

01

Apply at Korvia.com

Day 1

Submit an online application form at www.korvia.com. If accepted, you'll be matched with a recruiter for an individual interview to decide the best program and positions for you.

02

Submit EPIK Application, SMOE Attachment & Initial Documents

2-4 weeks

Complete the EPIK program application with the SMOE attachment, plus the initial document set (resume, personal statement, copy of degree, etc.).

03

EPIK Interview

30-45 min

EPIK schedules an official phone or video interview for EPIK/SMOE acceptance. Seoul placement weights this interview heavily due to competition.

04

Submit EPIK & SMOE Final Documents

2-6 weeks

Gather and send your final document set to Korvia within the specified submission window: apostilled criminal record check, sealed transcripts, TEFL certificate, medical forms. Korvia double-checks each document, then forwards them to EPIK HQ.

05

Placement

2-6 weeks

Placement is first-come, first-served. Once your documents are received, EPIK assigns you to a district matching your preference — or to another Seoul area where teachers are needed.

06

Apply for Visa with NOA

2-4 weeks

After placement is confirmed, SMOE sends a Notice of Appointment (NOA) number. Take it to the Korean consulate in your jurisdiction to apply for the E-2-2 teaching visa.

07

Book a One-Way Flight Ticket

Before departure

Book a one-way flight to South Korea. You pay upfront, then receive the ₩1,300,000 Entrance Allowance as reimbursement after your first paycheck.

08

EPIK Orientation in Korea

~9 days

Fly into Korea and meet EPIK at the airport. All-expenses-paid 9-day orientation with teaching strategies, Korean language classes, and cultural training.

09

First Day of School

Contract begins

Move into your Seoul apartment and start teaching. Congratulations — you're officially an SMOE teacher!

Tips to Land a Seoul Placement

Seoul is the most competitive SMOE/EPIK region — these tactics separate competitive applicants from the rest.

Apply Early

Seoul fills fastest in the EPIK cycle. Submit within the first 1-2 weeks of the application window for the strongest chance.

Strengthen Qualifications

Seoul's minimum grade (C) requires TEFL or teaching experience. Applicants with a degree in Education, TESOL, or 1+ year of teaching reach grades B/A and rank higher.

Prepare for the Interview

The EPIK interview carries extra weight for Seoul. Work with your Korvia advisor on interview prep — sample questions, teaching philosophy, and lesson demonstration.

Start Apostille Early

Criminal record apostille processing takes 2-6 weeks and is the #1 cause of SMOE application delays. Start this the moment you apply.

SMOE Process FAQ

Q.When does the SMOE intake happen — Spring or Fall?

SMOE runs two intakes per year, aligned with the EPIK calendar. The Spring intake opens applications in roughly August–October for a late-February start date, and the Fall intake opens in roughly February–April for a late-August start date. Seoul is the fastest region to fill, so submitting within the first 1–2 weeks of either window gives you the strongest chance.

Q.How is the SMOE interview different from a general EPIK interview?

SMOE applicants go through the standard EPIK interview, but Seoul placements weight the interview score more heavily than provincial placements because of competition. Expect deeper follow-up questions on classroom management, multi-level instruction, and working with large classes — Seoul schools often have 30+ students. Your Korvia advisor will tailor prep specifically to the Seoul interview profile.

Q.Can I choose a specific Seoul district (강남, 종로, 송파, etc.)?

You list preferred districts on the SMOE attachment form, but final placement is decided by SMOE based on vacancies, your qualifications, and application timing. Early applicants with strong credentials are more likely to match preferred districts. Applicants who apply late in the window are typically placed in districts with remaining openings.

Q.What is Seoul's alphabet grading system and how does it differ from EPIK Levels?

Seoul uses its own grading scale (S, A, B, C) instead of the numeric EPIK Levels 1–3. Roughly: S = Master's in Education + teaching experience, A = TEFL + teaching experience, B = TEFL + degree, C = minimum threshold (TEFL required). The minimum accepted SMOE grade is C — candidates without TEFL are not eligible for Seoul even if they would qualify for Level 3 elsewhere.

Q.How competitive is SMOE compared to other EPIK regions?

Seoul is the most competitive EPIK region. Applications typically exceed openings by 3–4x each intake, and Seoul closes first — sometimes within days of opening. Candidates with TEFL plus 1+ year of teaching experience or a degree in Education place at significantly higher rates. If Seoul is your first choice, apply the day the window opens and have all documents pre-prepared.

Q.Do Seoul applicants need any documents beyond the standard EPIK set?

You submit the standard EPIK document set plus the SMOE attachment (a 1–2 page form covering Seoul district preferences, teaching philosophy for urban classrooms, and co-teacher collaboration style). Document substance (apostilled CRC, sealed transcripts, TEFL certificate, degree) is the same as EPIK — but Seoul reviewers scrutinize the SMOE attachment essays more closely, so invest time there.
