SMOE eligibility follows the standard EPIK framework, but Seoul is the most competitive placement in the program. The 6 SMOE Eligibility Requirements
Citizen of One of the 7 Native English-Speaking Countries
The seven countries recognized by the South Korean government are the USA, Canada, UK, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
Ethnic Korean Applicants with Foreign Citizenship
Ethnic Korean applicants with foreign citizenship or legal residency in one of the 7 native English-speaking countries must have been taught in English-language schools from junior high onward and have lived abroad for a minimum of 10 years. Male citizens of the Republic of Korea under 35 must have completed mandatory military service or received an official waiver.
Applicants Who Emigrated to One of the 7 Countries
Applicants from non-English language backgrounds whose first language is not English and immigrated to one of the 7 native English-speaking countries must have been taught at English-language schools from junior high through university.
Canadian citizens from the Quebec Province must have been taught at English-language schools from junior high through university to qualify.
Hold a 3–4 Year Bachelor's Degree in Any Field
Applicants must hold a 3-4 year BA or BS in any field to apply. Final-year university students may also apply to SMOE, but must submit a Letter of Intent to Graduate in addition to the regular EPIK/SMOE documents.
Higher, National, and Advanced Diplomas are NOT eligible.
Be TEFL / TESOL / CELTA Certified
Applicants must have completed (or currently be enrolled in) a 100+ hour TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certification program. Both online and offline certifications are accepted by EPIK and SMOE.
Exempt: those with a Bachelor's or Master's in Education, a valid teacher's certificate, or 1 year of TaLK experience. Even if exempt, TEFL is strongly recommended for Seoul placement.
No Criminal Record (Misdemeanors or Felonies)
Applicants applying to SMOE cannot have any criminal record. A National-Level Criminal Background Check is required and must be completely clear — both misdemeanors (e.g. public intoxication) and felonies disqualify an applicant.
Traffic violations generally do not appear on CRCs.
Good Mental & Physical Health
EPIK and SMOE only accept applicants in good health without major health problems. A self-medical check survey is required, plus a physical exam after arriving in Korea.
Clinical medical conditions require a doctor's note confirming the condition will not affect teaching ability abroad.
Under the Age of 62
SMOE does not hire individuals over the age of 62 (the Korean statutory retirement age).
Tips for Seoul Placement
Meeting the requirements is the baseline — these tactics separate competitive SMOE applicants.
Apply Early
Seoul positions fill fastest — submit within the first 1-2 weeks of the application window for the best chance.
Get TEFL Certified
Even if your degree exempts you, a TEFL certificate signals commitment and improves your SMOE placement ranking.
Highlight Teaching Experience
ESL, tutoring, or substitute teaching experience significantly boosts your Seoul placement chances.
Prepare for the Interview
The EPIK interview carries extra weight for Seoul placements. Work with your Korvia advisor on interview prep.
SMOE Eligibility FAQ
Q.Is SMOE harder to get into than other EPIK regions?
Yes. Seoul (SMOE) is the most competitive EPIK placement because it offers the highest visibility, best infrastructure, and top cultural experiences. Applicants with TEFL certification plus teaching experience consistently rank higher than those who meet only the minimum.
Q.Does SMOE use the same levels as other EPIK provinces?
No. Seoul uses its own alphabet grading system (S, A, B, C) rather than numeric levels. The minimum accepted level is C — which roughly equates to Level 2 in other provinces — so teachers without TEFL or teaching experience cannot apply to SMOE.
Q.Can I apply directly to SMOE or only through EPIK?
Applications for SMOE positions go through the EPIK process. You select Seoul (SMOE) as your preferred province during your EPIK application — there is no separate SMOE-only application window.
Q.Do I need to speak Korean to apply to SMOE?
No. Korean language skills are not required. All classes are taught in English, and your co-teacher handles translation and administrative coordination.
