Wirye New Town (위례신도시) is a planned residential district straddling the borders of Songpa-gu (Seoul), Seongnam, and Hanam — meaning parts of it are technically inside Seoul, while others are Gyeonggi. For teachers, this administrative nuance rarely matters: the whole area shares a unified character, exceptional walkability, and arguably the most pleasant urban design of any Korean new town.

Built from 2013, Wirye was master-planned with pedestrian priority from the start. The Wirye Canal Road (위례 중앙광장 and 위례별로) is a tree-lined promenade with restaurants and cafés flanking a central water feature. The Wirye Tram (노면전차, under construction) is planned to link the district to Jamsil Station, already 5–10 min by Seoul Metro Line 8 from Namwirye Station. Rents are notably higher than other Gyeonggi new towns — Wirye commands a premium for its design quality and Seoul adjacency.

Cost of Living

1-bedroom: 700,000–1,300,000 KRW/month (premium for Seoul-adjacent new town). Meals: 9,000–14,000 KRW. Higher cost than typical Gyeonggi cities.

Housing

Modern 2013–2020 apartment complexes, very well-maintained. Limited officetel stock. Most units are larger family apartments — studios are scarce and competitive.

Small. Wirye attracts professionals more than young single teachers due to rent levels. Growing but still developing social infrastructure.
