Uijeongbu (의정부시) sits at the northern edge of the Seoul Capital Area, historically known for two things: the US military presence that once surrounded it, and the invention of budae-jjigae (부대찌개) — Korea's iconic "army stew" combining SPAM, hot dogs, ramen, and kimchi, born from post-war American military surplus food. The US military largely departed by 2020, leaving behind a city in active transformation.
For English teachers, Uijeongbu offers the lowest rents of any Seoul-metro-connected city: studios from 250,000–450,000 KRW/month, with Seoul Metro Line 1 running directly to Seoul Station (40–50 min) and Seoul Metro Line 7 (via Dobongsan, 35 min to central Seoul). The trade-off is fewer amenities and a smaller expat community than southern Gyeonggi cities.
