Teach English in Busan

Korea's beach city — surf culture, seafood markets, hillside villages, and a pace of life that makes Seoul feel frantic by comparison.

Cost of Living

Moderate — comparable to outer Seoul

Busan Station

Busan is Korea's second-largest city and arguably its most liveable for young expats who prioritise lifestyle over career ladder. Perched between mountains and sea, the city has a natural topography that no amount of urban planning could replicate — from the neon-lit Haeundae beach strip to the pastel-coloured Gamcheon Culture Village clinging to a hillside, Busan is genuinely photogenic. The seafood is some of Asia's finest, the weather is milder than Seoul in winter, and the cost of living is noticeably lower.

For English teachers, Busan offers a different Korea experience. The vibe is slower, friendlier by reputation, and there's a strong expat teacher community centred around Haeundae, Seomyeon, and Nampo-dong. The local accent is distinct (Busan dialect/사투리 is one of Korea's most recognisable), which adds character. Gwangalli Beach and Haeundae Beach are both connected to the metro, making after-school beach walks a genuine daily option.

The practical trade-off is that Busan's hagwon market is smaller and pay scales are slightly lower on average than Seoul or Gangnam. The city is large but feels more contained — you can genuinely know your neighbourhood. For anyone who wants beach access, a strong expat social scene, and lower stress than Seoul, Busan consistently tops English teacher surveys.

Cost of Living

Studio rent: 350,000–600,000 KRW/month. Meals: 7,000–11,000 KRW. Beer at a bar: 4,000–6,000 KRW. Noticeably cheaper than Seoul overall.

Housing

Mix of older apartment blocks and newer officetel complexes. Haeundae offers beachside apartments (pricier); Seomyeon and Gwangalli are more affordable with good access.
