Benefits FAQ
Q.Why is GOE housing stipend ₩400K but SMOE's is ₩500K?
Housing costs differ by region. SMOE's ₩500K reflects Seoul's higher rent; GOE's ₩400K reflects Gyeongnam's lower cost of living. The stipend is paid only if the school cannot directly provide housing — most GOE teachers receive actual apartments.
Q.Can I get both settlement and renewal allowances?
No. The Settlement Allowance (₩300K) is only for first-year teachers. Renewing teachers at the same school receive the Renewal Allowance (₩2M split ₩700K + ₩1.3M) instead. You cannot receive both in the same year.
Q.Why does GOE give 26 vacation days but SMOE only 21?
Gyeongnam Office of Education (GOE) operates independently from Seoul (SMOE) and has its own contract terms. GOE's 26-day vacation is actually one of the most generous in any Korean public school program.
Q.Is the renewal allowance worth renewing for?
Yes — it's one of the most generous perks in public school teaching. ₩2M plus a salary level increase (typically grade 1+ bump of ₩100K-200K per month) makes renewing at GOE financially compelling. Total 2-year earnings increase by ~₩4-5M over non-renewing equivalents.
