Ulsan is South Korea's most industrial city, responsible for approximately 21% of the country's total exports. The Hyundai Motor Company plant here is one of the world's largest single automobile manufacturing complexes; Hyundai Heavy Industries operates the world's largest shipyard. This industrial character shapes the city — it's less touristic than most Korean cities, but that also means it's authentic, well-salaried, and tightly-knit.
The city's most surprising asset is Taehwagang Grand Park — a dramatic urban regeneration success story where a polluted industrial river was transformed into a 24km riverside park of bamboo forests, reed beds, and wetlands that attract millions of migratory birds annually. In late autumn the silver grass (억새) turns golden along the entire riverbank. Nearby, Ganjeolgot Cape is Korea's easternmost point and one of the most popular spots in the country to watch the New Year sunrise.
For English teachers who want real Korean experience without the tourist overlay, Ulsan delivers. The hagwon market is active (Hyundai employee families are ambitious about education), salaries are solid compared to smaller provincial cities, and the atmosphere is genuinely Korean in a way that tourist-heavy cities can't replicate.
Cost of Living
Studio: 350,000–600,000 KRW/month. Higher than Daegu or Gwangju due to industrial sector income levels, but significantly lower than Seoul.
Housing
Newer apartments in Nam-gu and Jung-gu. Industrial worker housing in outskirts is cheaper. Most hagwons provide or subsidise housing.
Key Neighbourhoods
Nam-gu (Samsan
commercial, most expats)
Jung-gu (historic centre, Taehwagang Park)
Buk-gu (newer residential)
Ulju-gun (rural, coastal)
