Sejong Special Autonomous City is South Korea's newest metropolis, formally designated as the administrative capital in 2012 to relieve Seoul's extreme concentration of government functions. Half of Korea's central government ministries now operate here, along with the Prime Minister's office. The city was built from scratch on reclaimed farmland — wide cycling paths, the stunning Sejong Lake Park at its geographic centre, and a self-consciously modern urban design distinguish it from any other Korean city.
The population profile is uniquely homogeneous: primarily young government workers and their families, many with higher education and above-average incomes. For English teachers, this translates to motivated, educated students and strong parental involvement in education. The hagwon market is growing faster than the city's general growth rate as families invest heavily in their children's English education.
The honest trade-off: Sejong lacks the cultural depth, nightlife, and food diversity of more established cities. Daejeon, just 30–40 minutes by bus, fills that gap on weekends. Seoul is accessible in around 1.5 hours. For teachers who value clean, modern surroundings with well-resourced families and don't require urban entertainment, Sejong is an excellent posting.
Cost of Living
Studio: 400,000–700,000 KRW/month — new city premium. Still 30–40% cheaper than comparable Seoul areas. Meals: 8,000–13,000 KRW.
Housing
Predominantly brand-new high-rise apartment complexes. Many furnished monthly rentals available. Government workers often receive subsidised housing, raising private market rates slightly.
