South Jeolla Province (전라남도) stretches along Korea's southwestern coast and encompasses more than 2,000 islands — the majority of Korea's total island count. The province is strikingly beautiful: azalea-covered hillsides in spring, golden reed fields in autumn, Boseong's terraced green tea plantations among the mountains, and the dramatic tidal flats (갯벌) of Suncheon Bay — a UNESCO Wetland Reserve and one of Asia's five major coastal wetlands.
Yeosu is the province's most visited city and one of Korea's great harbours: the 2012 Yeosu World Expo left a legacy of waterfront development, and the Yeosu Night Sea (여수 밤바다) has become a cultural shorthand for Korean romance thanks to the enormously popular ballad of the same name. Yeosu-Expo KTX makes the city accessible from Seoul in under 3 hours.
For EPIK teachers, Jeonnam offers Korea's lowest cost of living, deeply authentic provincial culture, and stunning natural environments. The trade-off is distance from Seoul (3–4 hours) and limited English infrastructure in rural placements.

Transit Tip
KTX to Yeosu is the most efficient access point. Bus connections spread from Yeosu and Mokpo to smaller cities. Car is useful for island/coastal exploration.
