Jeonbuk Special Autonomous Province is home to Jeonju — one of Korea's most visited domestic travel destinations and an absolute must-visit for any expat teacher. Jeonju Hanok Village (전주 한옥마을) preserves over 800 traditional Korean houses (hanok) in a dense, walkable neighbourhood where you can eat bibimbap for breakfast, rent a hanbok for photographs, browse artisan craft shops, and sample traditional plum wine all within a 2km radius. The village is genuinely preserved — not reconstructed — and remains a living community.
Jeonju's food culture stands above everywhere else in Korea: the city's traditional table (jeonju hansik) is considered the pinnacle of Korean cuisine, with bibimbap here prepared with sesame-seasoned stone-pot rice, 30+ carefully seasoned vegetable toppings, and the city's distinctive gochujang sauce. For English teachers, Jeonju is deeply satisfying: the cultural richness compensates for fewer urban amenities, costs are the lowest of any Korean city of its size, and the students reflect the province's conservative but warm-hearted character.
Cost of Living
Studio: 180,000–350,000 KRW/month. Among the cheapest of any Korean city. Meals: 6,000–9,000 KRW, and genuinely excellent quality.
Housing
Excellent availability of affordable housing near universities (Chonbuk National University, Jeonju University). Hanok Village area has upscale guesthouses but standard apartments nearby.
