Teach English in Jeju Island

Korea's volcanic island paradise — UNESCO triple crown, haenyeo diving culture, Hallasan Korea's highest mountain, and the most in-demand EPIK placement in the country.

Cost of Living

Moderate — comparable to outer Seoul

Region

Jeju

From Seoul

Domestic flight: ~1hr from Gimpo Airport (GMP) — the world's busiest domestic air route

Key Stations

Jeju International Airport

Jeju Special Autonomous Province is South Korea's largest island and its most popular domestic tourist destination, welcoming over 15 million visitors annually. The island holds UNESCO's rare triple designation: Biosphere Reserve, World Heritage Site (Hallasan Mountain, lava tubes, and Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak), and Global Geopark. Hallasan (한라산) at 1,950m is South Korea's highest peak — a challenging but achievable one-day hike with extraordinary summit crater views.

The island has a distinct identity from mainland Korea: a warmer subtropical climate (plum blossoms arrive in February, two months before Seoul), the Jeju dialect (제주어) largely unintelligible to Seoul Koreans, haenyeo (해녀 — the UNESCO-listed elderly female free-divers who harvest seafood without breathing equipment), Black Pork (heukdwaeji 흑돼지) barbecue that's arguably the best pork in Korea, and an Olle Trail coastal hiking network of 437km that makes the island endlessly walkable.

For English teachers, Jeju is the dream posting and the most competitive one: EPIK positions fill faster than any other province precisely because the lifestyle is exceptional. Apply early, write a strong application, and prepare to fight for it. Those who secure a Jeju placement consistently rank it among the best decisions of their lives.

Cost of Living

Tourism premium is real: Studio in Jeju City: 350,000–650,000 KRW/month. EPIK includes housing. Dining: local restaurants 8,000–12,000 KRW; tourist areas significantly more.

Housing

EPIK placements include housing. Independent rental market is competitive in Jeju City but available. Seogwipo (south side) is quieter and cheaper.

Key Neighbourhoods

Jeju City (main hub, airport, commercial)

Seogwipo (south coast, calmer, tourist resort area)

Aewol (north coast, trendy cafés)

Jungmun (resort area)

Hallasan zone (mountainside placements)

Getting Around

From Seoul

Domestic flight: ~1hr from Gimpo Airport (GMP) — the world's busiest domestic air route. Ferry from Mokpo/Wando: ~1–2 hrs.

Subway Lines

  • No subway — rental car, bus, or e-scooter

Key Stations

  • Jeju International Airport (JEJ)
  • Jeju City Bus Terminal
  • Seogwipo (south island hub)

Transit Tip

Renting a car is highly recommended for island exploration — many of the best spots aren't bus-accessible. International driver's licence required. Road trips around Jeju are legendary.

Culture & Vibe

Relaxed, subtropical, tourist-friendly, and uniquely Jeju. The island moves at a different pace from mainland Korea — intentional, unhurried, deeply outdoor-oriented.
