North Gyeongsang Province (경상북도) is Korea's historical heartland. Gyeongju — the millennium capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC–935 AD) — is sometimes called the "museum without walls": royal burial mounds (tumuli) rise from city parks, stone observatory towers stand in residential neighbourhoods, and UNESCO World Heritage temple complexes sit in mountain valleys minutes from the city centre. Bulguksa Temple (불국사) and Seokguram Grotto represent some of the finest Buddhist architecture in East Asia.
Andong preserves Korea's most intact traditional Confucian culture: Hahoe UNESCO Folk Village (하회마을) is a living village where yangban (aristocratic) culture is maintained, and the Andong Mask Dance Festival is one of Korea's most internationally recognised traditional performing arts events. Pohang, the province's largest industrial city, is home to POSCO Steel and a surprising coast of black sand beaches and fresh sashimi restaurants.
For EPIK teachers, Gyeongbuk offers some of Korea's richest cultural immersion placements — particularly in Gyeongju and Andong — alongside affordable living and strong community support through the North Gyeongsang Provincial Office of Education.
