Teach English in Daegu

Korea's fashion capital and fashion-forward youth hub — cheaper than Seoul with a surprisingly vibrant downtown and the hottest summers in Korea.

Low — great for savings

Key Stations

Dongdaegu Station

Daegu is Korea's fourth-largest metropolitan area and its self-declared fashion capital — a claim backed by the Daegu Textile & Fashion Museum, the city's historic textile industry, and the fashion-focused streets of Dongseongno. While Seoul gets the global headlines, Daegu has quietly developed one of Korea's most vibrant young adult cultural scenes, centred around its covered shopping arcades, Dongseongno pedestrian strip, and the university districts.

For English teachers, Daegu is often considered the sweet spot: pay is lower than Gangnam but reasonable, the cost of living is noticeably cheaper than Seoul or Busan, and the expat community is established and social. The city has a genuine pride in its local culture that makes it feel less like a Seoul satellite and more like its own entity. The Suseong-gu (Suseong Lake) area is home to the most affluent residents and Korea's highest concentration of private tutors and hagwons outside Seoul.

One honest caveat: Daegu summers are brutal. The city sits in a basin surrounded by mountains, trapping heat in August and regularly recording Korea's highest temperatures (36-38°C+ is common). Winter, by contrast, is cold and dry. Those weather extremes aside, the city rewards teachers who invest in it — there's consistently more to discover.

Cost of Living

Studio rent: 280,000–500,000 KRW/month. Meals: 6,000–10,000 KRW. Beer at a local bar: 3,500–5,000 KRW. Genuinely one of Korea's cheapest major cities.

Housing

Mix of older multi-family housing and newer apartment blocks. Suseong-gu has newer apartment complexes; downtown areas are more affordable and lively.
