Chungcheong North Province (충청북도) is South Korea's only completely landlocked province, bordered by mountains on all sides. Its capital, Cheongju, has a remarkable historical claim: it was here that the world's oldest surviving books printed with moveable metal type were produced — the Jikji manuscript (1377), predating Gutenberg's Bible by 78 years, now in the French National Library.
For EPIK teachers, Chungbuk offers quintessentially authentic Korean rural and small-city life: genuine interaction with Korean culture unmediated by tourism or large expat communities, very low living costs, and the proximity of Songnisan National Park for outdoor weekends. Cheongju is large enough to have modern conveniences while small enough that you'll quickly feel like a local.
Cost of Living
Studio in Cheongju: 200,000–380,000 KRW/month. Rural placements even cheaper, usually with EPIK housing included. Meals: 6,000–8,000 KRW.
Housing
EPIK housing provided in most placements. Independent housing in Cheongju is very affordable.
