Q1.What is the difference between a public school and a private academy (hagwon)?

There are many differences between working at a public school vs. a private academy (hagwon) in Korea. The biggest difference interested individuals need to know is that a Hagwon is primarily a business while a public school is a standard school. The following also tends to be the biggest differences: Working hours – Hagwons teachers work from the afternoon until night time while public school teachers work in the morning until late afternoon. Salary – Hagwon teachers usually enjoy higher salaries and potential for raises. Vacation – Public school teachers enjoy around 20 days of paid vacation while hagwon teachers usually have around 5-10 days of paid vacation.

Q2.Can I arrive in Korea before my contract starts?

This will depend on what program you will be teaching with. Some contracts have conditions that in order for teachers to receive their flight reimbursement or allowance they must arrive in Korea within a certain number of days form their contract’s starting date. Teachers work from 1 pm to 9 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm or 11-7 on weekends. Six of these hours are in class. In a given week, there are 35 working hours and 30 contact hours.

Q4.Non-married joint applicants are available to working in the same city?

While public school programs do allow joint applicants to teach in their schools, public school programs only support married couples as join applicants. In addition, married couples will be asked to confirm their marital status with a marriage certificate.

Q5.Can I speak to the current native English teacher at the school?

This is at the school’s discretion. In most case, however only a teacher who receives a final job offer will be allowed by the school to contact the current NET. This is for teacher privacy reasons.

Q6.Could you explain how the vacation days work? I know you can only take a certain amount in the Winter and in the Summer.

It depends on which school and what contract you will go into. Especially due to COVID-19 the schools days are being delayed so, we have no idea how it's going to work this time.

We know it's going to be about 2 weeks in total.
