If you're applying to teach English in Korea through EPIK, one of the first requirements you'll encounter is a TEFL certificate. But do you actually need one? How many hours? Does it matter if it's online? And how does it affect your salary?
This guide covers everything you need to know about TEFL certification for Korea in 2026 — the official requirements, who's exempt, what to look for in a course, and how to time it so you're ready when you need to be.
What EPIK Requires
According to official EPIK guidelines, applicants must hold a TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate of at least 100 hoursif their bachelor's degree is not in Education. This is a firm requirement — 60-hour or 40-hour certificates won't qualify.
The acronyms can be confusing, so let's clarify:
- TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) — the most common certification for teaching abroad
- TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) — functionally identical to TEFL for EPIK purposes
- CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) — a more intensive, internationally recognized qualification by Cambridge
EPIK accepts all three. The key criterion is the 100-hour minimum.
Important
EPIK's 100-hour requirement is not flexible. If your certificate says 80 hours or doesn't specify hours, it may not be accepted. Always verify the hour count before enrolling in a course. Contact Korvia if you're unsure whether a specific program qualifies.
Who Is Exempt from the TEFL Requirement?
You do not need a TEFL certificate if you hold one of the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) — any specialization
- Master of Education (M.Ed.) — any specialization
- A bachelor's or master's degree in Education from an accredited university (this includes degrees like BA in Elementary Education, MA in Curriculum & Instruction, etc.)
If your degree is in English, English Literature, Linguistics, or any other field that isn't specifically Education, you'll still need the TEFL. A degree in English does not exempt you — this is a common misconception.
Korvia Tip
Not sure if your degree qualifies for an exemption? Send your transcript to your Korvia coordinator. We review exemption eligibility as part of the application process and can tell you quickly whether you need a TEFL or not.
Online vs. In-Person TEFL Courses
EPIK accepts both online and in-person TEFL courses, as long as they meet the 100-hour minimum. Each format has trade-offs:
| Factor | Online TEFL | In-Person TEFL |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $150–$500 USD | $1,000–$2,500 USD |
| Duration | Self-paced (2–12 weeks typical) | 4–6 weeks full-time |
| Teaching Practice | Usually none or simulated | Real classroom hours included |
| Flexibility | Complete from anywhere, on your schedule | Requires travel and full-time commitment |
| Accepted by EPIK? | Yes (100+ hours) | Yes (100+ hours) |
For EPIK application purposes, an affordable online 120-hour TEFL works just as well as an expensive in-person program. However, if you have no teaching experience at all, an in-person course with a practicum component will better prepare you for the classroom. It's an investment in your confidence, not just a checkbox.
How TEFL Affects Your EPIK Salary Level
Your TEFL certificate itself doesn't directly determine your salary level — EPIK salary levels are based on your qualifications and teaching experiencecombined. However, TEFL plays an indirect role:
- Without TEFL (Education degree holders):You're evaluated based on your degree level and any teaching experience
- With TEFL (non-Education degree):The TEFL meets the minimum qualification. Additional qualifications — a master's degree, teaching experience, or a higher-level TEFL/CELTA — can help place you at a higher salary level
For detailed salary scales, see our EPIK salary levels breakdown. Seoul (SMOE) offers 8 levels (A through H) ranging from ₩1,800,000 to ₩2,700,000 per month. GEPIK salaries range from ₩2,100,000 to ₩2,600,000, and GOE from ₩2,100,000 to ₩2,700,000.
Korvia Tip
If you have the budget, a 120-hour or 150-hour TEFL with a specialist module (e.g., teaching young learners, business English) looks stronger on your application than a bare-minimum 100-hour course. It won't guarantee a higher salary level, but it shows EPIK you're taking the role seriously.
What to Look for in a TEFL Course
Not all TEFL courses are created equal. Here's what matters for an EPIK application:
- 100+ hours clearly stated on the certificate. The certificate itself must show the total hours. If it doesn't, EPIK may not accept it.
- Accreditation.Look for courses accredited by recognized bodies like ACCREDITAT, IATQuO, or ODLQC. Avoid "certificate mills" that sell certificates without real coursework.
- Grammar, lesson planning, and classroom management modules. These are the skills you'll actually use in Korea.
- A physical or digital certificate you can submit. EPIK needs a copy of your certificate — make sure the provider issues one promptly after completion.
CELTA: Is It Worth the Extra Cost?
The Cambridge CELTA is the gold standard of English teaching certifications. It's 120+ hours, includes observed teaching practice with real students, and is recognized worldwide. It typically costs $1,500–$2,500 USD and requires 4–5 weeks of full-time study.
Is it necessary for EPIK? No. A standard 120-hour online TEFL will get you into the program. But if you're planning a long-term career in English teaching — or want to teach in competitive markets like the Middle East or Europe after Korea — a CELTA opens more doors. It's also genuinely the best preparation for the classroom you can get.
For a first-time teacher who plans to spend 1–2 years in Korea and then move on to other things, a solid online TEFL is perfectly adequate.
When Should You Complete Your TEFL?
Timing matters. Here's the recommended timeline for Fall 2026 EPIK applicants:
| Your Situation | When to Start TEFL | Finish By |
|---|---|---|
| Already applied or planning to apply soon | Immediately | Before your EPIK application is submitted (March–May) |
| Considering Korea but not sure yet | Now — it takes 4–8 weeks | Having it done removes a barrier to applying |
| Targeting Spring 2027 instead | Summer 2026 | September–October 2026 |
The key point: don't let the TEFL become a bottleneck. Many applicants lose time because they wait until after their Korvia interview to start the course, then rush to finish before the document deadline. Start early and you won't have that stress.
Korvia Tip
You don't need to finish your TEFL before submitting your initial Korvia application. Apply first, then complete the TEFL while your application is being processed. Just make sure it's done before your EPIK application package is finalized — your coordinator will give you a clear deadline.
Common TEFL Questions
Can I use a TEFL I got years ago?
Yes. TEFL certificates don't expire. If you completed a 100+ hour course five years ago, it still counts. Just make sure you can provide the original certificate or a verified copy.
Do I need a TEFL for hagwon jobs too?
Hagwons (private academies) set their own requirements. Many prefer TEFL-certified teachers, but it's not always mandatory. Having one makes you more competitive regardless. Learn more about the differences in our hagwon vs EPIK guide.
What if I have a teaching license but not a TEFL?
A valid teaching license from your home country typically satisfies EPIK's requirement in place of a TEFL, since it implies an Education degree. Confirm with your Korvia coordinator, as specific cases may vary.
Is there a "best" TEFL provider?
We don't endorse specific providers, but we can tell you what's worked for our applicants. Visit our TEFL page for current recommendations and any partner discounts we offer.
Next Steps
If you need a TEFL, the best time to start is now. Pick a reputable 120-hour online course, set aside an hour or two per day, and you can have it done in 4–6 weeks. Meanwhile, submit your Korvia application so your coordinator can start preparing the rest of your EPIK application package.
