Our contributor, City Ambassador Arielle Pukanecz, gives you an inside look at the Cheonggyechon Stream in Seoul.

Looking for a peaceful, sunrise walk in Seoul? How about a romantic sunset stroll? One of my favorite spots in the city, which is beautiful year around, is Cheonggyecheon. Cheonggyechoen is surrounded by City Hall, Myeong-dong, Gwanghwamun, and many palaces, and is a quick walk from Insa-dong. You should make it a mission to find this peaceful stream in the middle of the city!

Throughout the year, there are many amazing events that happen along its pathways and bridges. From upcycling exhibitions to the annual lantern festival, it’s always bustling with crowds of tourists and locals alike. There are often photography and art exhibitions, so keep your eyes peeled for the local talent. They even have a few hidden spots to throw a coin and make a wish. Don’t forget to look out for those hidden spots and find the rainbow bridge on your night strolls. I recommend visiting some of the cool museums and bookstores that also run along the stream.

Directions: The easiest way to get there from the subway is taking exit 5 of Gwanghwamun Station. Walk straight and make a left at the giant shell statue, which marks the start of the stream. For early birds and night owls, there’s at least one 24 hour café along the stream, so you can get a caffeine fix while waiting for the sunrise.

Pro-tip: The lantern festival will begin November 3rd and end November 19th. Try to get there by sunrise at least once; the reflections from the surrounding buildings with lanterns on the water is a breathtaking sight!
