⑨ Salary Level

In the row labeled “CURRENT QUALIFICATION”, please mark an “X” in the box which corresponds to the salary level you currently qualify for.  In the row labeled “EXPECTED QUALIFICATION”, please mark an “X” in the box which corresponds to the salary level you expect to qualify for by the time you would begin the EPIK contract in late August 2012.

Salary Level: Salary is standardized according to qualifications and/or teaching experience. Please note that only full-time teaching experience of a minimum of “one full academic year” makes an applicant eligible for a higher salary. Also, TEFL and TESOL training must consist of a minimum of 100 hours and be proved with documentation.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to prove the course hours. The EPIK pay scale can be found on the EPIK website.

⑩ Joint Application / Dependants

Joint Application: EPIK views joint applicants as one administrative partnership in the application process and will not process one applicant’s application or documents without the joint applicant’s as well. If one joint applicant withdraws from the application process, remove his/her name from the application form and inform your agent/the EPIK office as soon as possible to avoid any processing delays. Due to the limited number of joint applicant positions, joint application is restricted to married couples.  We cannot guarantee placement in the same location for non-married applicants.

Dependants: EPIK does not provide family or couples housing for applicants with a dependant. Additionally, applicants with a dependant should fill out the “Statement of Intent” form attached at the end of this document. (See page 16) EPIK stresses that applicants should have a clear and viable plan for their dependants (e.g., schooling options for children and alternative activities for spouses/other dependants).

⑪ Contact Information for Letters of Recommendation

Fill in all of the requested fields. The referee is the individual who wrote the letter of recommendation.

Letters of Recommendation: Referees’ name and institutions listed here should be the same as those on the letters of recommendation submitted with the application form before the interview. The content of the letters should not change from the initial submission to the final submission unless specifically requested by the EPIK office.

Change of References: Applicants cannot change their referees unless specifically requested to do so by the EPIK office.

Contact Information: The contact information in this box should be the same as the contact information on the letters of recommendation.

⑫-1 Placement Preferences

Applicants are to select whether they prefer to go to a metropolitan location, province, or are flexible.  These are only preferences and should not be interpreted as guaranteed placement locations.  Applicants must ultimately be flexible about working anywhere in Korea.

⑫-2 EPIK-Seoul (SMOE Consideration)

Because documentation for SMOE is slightly different than national EPIK, we need to know prior to the interview if an applicant wants to be considered for Seoul.  By answering “yes” to this question, applicants will not be guaranteed recommendation to Seoul, but will only be considered for a position there.

⑫-3 Preference for Later Start Date

For the Fall 2012 term, the majority of the positions start at the end of August.  There are some, however, that are available either at the end of September or the end of October.

If you think that a September or October position is something that you might be interested in, please mark the appropriate box:

-“Late-Sept”: Mark this box if you would like to start around Sept 25th.

-“Late-Oct”: Mark this box if you would like to start around Oct. 25th.

-“Either”: Mark this box if you are open to starting in Aug, Sept, Oct.

-“Neither”: Mark this box if you are only interested in August.

⑫-4 Preference for type of Educational Setting

In numerical order (1 being the most preferred), list which type of school best matches your strengths.

Educational Setting: Note that Provincial/Metropolitan Offices of Education try to place successful applicants according to their suitability and strengths; however, there is much variation of availability between provinces and the type of educational setting cannot be guaranteed in advance. Applicants must be flexible.

Educational Settings: For reference, primary school includes grades 1-6; middle school includes grades 7-9; and high school includes grades 10-12.

Placement: Please note that the final acceptance and placement decision is made by the Provincial/Metropolitan Offices of Education and not the National EPIK office.

If you have no particular preference, please check the “Flexible” box.

Lesson Plan

A Guide to Lesson Planning

This is meant to be a concise statement of what you will need to think about for each stage of a lesson plan while you are putting it together. As you can find many examples of excellent lessons through your own research, this will be a general statement and discussion on the lesson planning process.

I. On Lesson Plan Template

The first parts of this section on the template Date, Unit (Title), Grade (No. of Students) will be largely self-explanatory, so only brief mention will be made of 'Unit (Title).’

  1. Unit

For a particular topic, you should be planning (approximately) five different lessons, so the ‘unit’ or theme should be the same over those five lessons, e.g. ‘Fruit’, ‘Transportation’, ‘Sports’, etc.

The remaining three items in this section, ‘Objectives’, ‘Key Expressions’, and ‘Teaching Aids/Materials’ will require a little more explanation:

  1. Objectives

It is in this section where you must describe the skills that a student should have by the end of the lesson. Of course, whether or not every student will grasp the objectives is another story, but you must list the goal(s). For example, you might put, “By the end of the lesson, students should be able to identify items on a menu and order a meal.”

  1. Make sure that your objectives are about conversation not memorization! It is not a good objective to have simple vocabulary as the only target, e.g. “By the end of the lesson, the students will know the names of fruit in English.” This could be a beginning, but it would have to be followed by a contextual skill for that vocabulary, e.g. “By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to tell each other their favorite fruit.”

  1. Key Expressions

Here, you would list the main phrases that the students should, at a minimum, master during the lesson. For the ‘Objectives’ examples above, an example might be, “I’d like ..., please.” Or, “My favorite fruit is …”

  1. The important thing here is that you don’t write your key phrases in your objectives. The objectives are the context within which the key expressions would be used.

  1. Teaching Aids/Materials

Anything that you will use in the course your lesson should be listed here.  Are you going to use a text, a worksheet, video, something from the internet? Write it down and list where you got and where you can find it again. Knowing how to access your materials again (especially if you need a URL) is pivotal to the flow of your lesson and it will also help any future teachers who teach it.

II. Introduction

The Introduction to your lesson will consist of, Greetings & Warm-up, Review, Class Arrangement and Presentation of Objectives.

  1. Greetings and Warm-up

This isn’t just a space for you to write ‘Hello’ or ‘How are you?’ It’s from this point where you set the entire lesson. Again, in line with the example of ‘Objectives’ and ‘Key Expressions’ above, your ‘greeting’ could be, “Hi, class. Do you know my favorite fruit?  What do you think it is?” Or you can start the class off with a fun game to warm up the class. Engaging a class, getting them to think right away, and giving them the focus of the lesson is what you should try to do in the greeting.

  1. Review

This could be an interactive question/answer about what you did with the students’ last class, or it could be accomplished by showing the students some of the material that you used last class to spark their memory. Most importantly, you should review what is linked to the material that you will cover in the current lesson. Even if you’re moving from ‘fruit’ to ‘vegetables’, you could still show them the flashcards from the former class and ask, “Do you like fruit?” and follow it with, “What food don’t you like?” to lead into vegetables.

  1. Class Arrangement

Will the students need to be in groups, pairs, or threes? Or, will you need to put something special on the board or walls; something on the video screen, perhaps?  This is where you would list the use of any aids/materials that will be placed around the class, too.

  1. Presentation of Objectives

This can be done in many different ways, but it’s important that students know what they are going to accomplish so that they are prepared to learn. A common spot on the black board that always has, “Today we will…” for the students to see what they’ll be doing, or a Power Point slide of the day’s ‘Key Expressions’ to which the students can continually refer is acceptable. It’s even acceptable to elicit the objectives from the students to present them: After a review, asking, “So, what do you think we’re going to do today?” (with a little prompting) will often result in the students outlining for each other what they are going to work on.

III. Development

The Development of your lesson is the most student centered part of the process.  Therefore, all the activities must be what the students are going to do. The teacher will definitely need to facilitate the activity, but they must also stand back and let learning happen between the peer groups of the class.

Will the students do a mill drill – an activity where class members must move around the class speaking to other class members on a certain topic – or will they play Go Fish with flashcards matching the topic of the day? Will they act out a sport, or recite a recipe for the rest of the class to guess what they’re playing/making? Will they have to do a running dictation – going in and out of the class individually to listen to a cassette for a limited amount of time to come back and tell their group so the whole script can be recited by the entire group once all the members have put it together – or will they create a sketch? This is where you write it all down.

It might be the case that one activity is sufficient. For example, a game of Go Fish can be a lengthy process, but if the first activity you have planned is a mill drill, a class of thirty-five  (an average Korean class size) will exhaust a short dialogue in about ten minutes, so make sure you have an idea of how long an activity will last so you are prepared to use as many activities as necessary to reach your lesson objectives.

IV. Conclusion

The three parts of the Conclusion, Summary, Evaluation of Objectives and Closing would be as follows:

  1. Summary

A good idea here is to go back to your ‘Presentation of Objectives’ portion of the lesson and repeat what was done here. If it’s on the board or a Power Point slide, the students should be able to say what the ‘Key Expressions’ were and identify what was achieved with an appropriate prompt, e.g. “What’s your favorite fruit?” for the student to respond, “My favorite fruit is…”.

  1. Evaluation of Objectives

Moving on from the ‘Summary’, once the students have re-visited the day’s objectives, they should be able to demonstrate that they have reached your objectives by performing the dialogue, identifying one of the cards from their game of Go Fish (and then asking for it the way they would have in the ‘Development’), or reporting what the other groups showed them in a game of charades about, for example, My Favorite Sport, saying, “My favorite sport is … and group one’s favorite sport is …”; and so on .

  1. Closing

Just as ‘Greetings’ isn’t about ‘Hello’, the ‘Closing’ isn’t about ‘Good-bye’. This is the most important part of your next lesson because it is here where you let them know what you’ll be doing in the next class. After praising the students for their performance in the ‘Summary’ and ‘Evaluation of Objectives’, you should tell them that next class they’ll be continuing with more work on the day’s topic, or that they’ll be moving on to something different. If it is different, now would be a good time to see how much prior knowledge that your students have by eliciting some of the vocabulary you might be using. Saying that you’ll be looking at transport and getting them to list, ‘car’, ‘plane’, ‘train’, is a good finish and good preparation.

※ For those who will come to the orientation site on their own, please arrive by 3:00 pm on Friday, April 20th.
※ Please check our website regularly for important updates beginning in early-April since the above information is subject to change.

Arrangement and Notification of Flight Details

(1) Please arrange for your flight to arrive at Incheon International airport on April 20th, Friday.
(2) When your flight arrangement has been confirmed, please inform your application office (a Korean consulate or embassy/ the Universities / your coordinator in the EPIK office / or the Recruiting agencies) of your flight details with your full name, flight number, departure airport, date and time of departure, and date and time of arrival at the airport.

Documents to be Prepared before Entry

(1) Missing documents: Please check the top of page 1 of the Important Notice for any missing required documents. Any missing required documents or additional documents (e.g. copies of Teacher’s/TESOL/TEFL/CELTA Certificates / Apostilled diploma / Proof of teaching experience) must arrive at the EPIK office by February 10th.
(2) Additional photos: As a successful applicant, you already submitted at least one passport photo with your application documents; you will be required to provide 2 additional photos shortly after your arrival for various administrative purposes. One photo will be submitted to your local Immigration office after the orientation when you apply for your alien registration card, and the other photo will be given to your school. Also, because the photos are for official purposes, it is important that they adhere to very specific guidelines:
① Photos must be 3x4 cm. (3 cm wide, 4 cm long).
② The photo must be a professional photo of your face and the top of your shoulders. Essentially, it must be a standard passport photo.
③ Please wear professional or semi-professional attire (no casual clothing please).
(3) Other documents (if applicable)
i. Original Teacher’s/TESOL/TEFL/CELTA certificates
* Purpose: POE/MOE may want to verify these original certificates because only copies of the certificates were submitted during the application process
ii. Residency Certification (Official proof of residency) (With the exception of Canadians & Irish)
* Tax laws vary from country to country, so please contact the tax or revenue authority in your home country for more information on how to obtain the proper residency certificate.
* Purpose: To qualify for exemption from Korean income taxes. The document is not required for your application to EPIK, but it is mandatory if you expect to be exempt from Korean income taxes while living in Korea. If you do not submit the document, you will simply have a small percentage of your salary (approximately 3-4%) deducted each month for Korean income taxes.
* EPIK will not assist you in obtaining this document. It is up to the individual applicant to receive this document.
Also, if you cannot obtain the certificate before you come to Korea, you may still qualify for tax exemption if you can submit it to your school after you begin your contract. It is strongly recommended, however, that you submit this document to your school as soon as possible after your arrival, preferably before you receive your first pay check. If you submit the residency certificate after you have received your first pay check, it is possible to be refunded for the tax that has been deducted from each of the preceding month’s pay checks; however, to avoid confusion, we strongly recommend submitting the document before you receive your first pay check. Therefore, you should apply for your residency certificate immediately and try to either bring it with you to the orientation or have it sent to Korea as soon as possible after you arrive. Do not have the residency certificate mailed to our office in Seoul. All residency certificates mailed to the EPIK office will be discarded.
Please be aware that you can only be exempt from Korean income taxes for a maximum of 2 years. So, if you have already worked in Korea for 2 years or more and have qualified for tax exemption during that time, you will no longer be eligible for tax exemption.

Entrance Allowance

* In most cases, within the first month of the contract, all EPIK teachers, regardless of level, will be provided with 1,300,000 KRW as an Entrance Allowance by their POE/MOE except those who change the sojourn of their existing visas. The final decision of those who are eligible for the entrance allowance and when exactly the funds will be disbursed will be determined by the POE/MOE.
* The entrance allowance is intended to assist with initial set-up costs for EPIK teachers including: airfare, transportation to the orientation or school upon arrival, and transportation to and from the later orientation for latecomers.
* Since you will not receive your entrance allowance until approximately one month after you start teaching, please bring enough money to live off of for one month (approx. $1,000 USD).

*FBI check may take up to 12 weeks and Korvia Consulting suggest you to apply FBI check as soon as possible.

FBI Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/faqs)

1. Does the FBI accept personal or business checks?

No. Personal or business checks are not an acceptable form of payment for departmental order (DO) requests. Personal or business checks submitted with a DO request will not be returned. The CJIS Division will destroy the monetary instrument and will provide the customer a letter explaining why the monetary instrument could not be used.

2. Do you have procedures for expeditious handling?

No. The CJIS Division does not expedite requests.

3. Can the FBI send the results to someone (or agency) other than myself?

Under Departmental Order 556-73, the results must go back to the requester, unless otherwise specified on the signed application. Note: The FBI will not send results to a government agency.

4. Where can I get my fingerprints taken?

Your local, county, or state law enforcement agencies may take your fingerprints for a fee. Also, some printing companies offer this service—check the yellow pages in your telephone book or search online.

5. What if my fingerprints are continuously rejected?

Have multiple sets of fingerprints taken, preferably by a fingerprinting technician. (This service may be available at a law enforcement agency). Mail all fingerprint forms to the CJIS Division with your request. For more information on taking legible fingerprints, refer to the Recording Legible Fingerprints brochure.

6. Can I use the fingerprint card I download from this site?

Yes. We will accept the downloaded paper fingerprint card only for the purpose of requesting an FBI Identification Record. If you go to a law enforcement agency or private fingerprinting agency to be fingerprinted, they may prefer to use a fingerprint card on standard card stock. You may use the fingerprint card provided by the printing agency.

7. Will my fingerprint card be returned?

No. Due to concerns related to the protection of personally identifiable information, fingerprint cards are no longer being returned either for a “no record” response or with an FBI Identification Record.

Any questions regarding this matter should be directed to the CJIS Customer Service Group at (304) 625-5590.

8. How do I notify the FBI if my address has changed since I submitted my request for my FBI Identification Record or if I want to verify my correct address was submitted?

Please complete the Address Change Request Form (pdf) and mail the signed form to the following address:

FBI CJIS Division – Record Request
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, WV 26306

The form can also be faxed to (304) 625-9792 or scanned and sent via e-mail to liaison@leo.gov.

Note: Changes will not be made unless a signature is present on the form.

9. Does the FBI provide apostilles*?

(*An apostille is a certification that a document that has been “legalized” or “authenticated” by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.)

The CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official on the results if requested at the time of submission. Documents prepared in this way may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requester to obtain an apostille if necessary. This procedure became effective on January 25, 2010 and will apply only to documents finalized after that date. Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted. This procedure replaces the letter formerly provided by the CJIS Division that indicated the service was not provided. The apostille service is not provided to individuals requesting search results for Canadian immigration, as it is not required for this purpose.

10. How do I challenge my FBI record?

The CJIS Division is not the source of the data appearing on identification records. All data is obtained from fingerprint submissions or related identification forms submitted to the FBI by local, state, and federal agencies. As a result, the responsibility for authentication and correction of such data rests upon the contributing agency (i.e., police department, county court, etc.). Please contact this agency or the central repository in the state where the arrest occurred to request a change, correction, or update. The FBI is not authorized to modify the record without written notification from the appropriate criminal justice agency.

Please do not book a flight for Korea yet since you should first make sure about your E2 visa after receiving your NOA and contract before purchasing a ticket.

FYI, F4 or F2 visa holders do not need to apply for an E2 visa to Korean consulate and enter Korea on F4 or F2 visa.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Korvia Consulting at epik@korvia.com.
